Weidenkopf Cabin

The Weidenkopf cabin, located in the Ski-Hi orchards south of Baraboo, is perhaps one of the most significant historic sites in the Baraboo and Sauk County area. The cabin rests on its original foundation and is surrounded by a commercial apple orchard which is almost as old as the cabin itself.

John Weidenkopf was given 160 acres of land in Sauk County in 1850 as a result of service in the Mexican-American War. In 1863 he built the present cabin and, with his wife Florentine, raised their family of 12 children.

While living in the cabin, rooms were built around it without structurally altering the cabin. The cabin was sold in 1907 to Arthur and Emma Bassett and has remained in the Bassett family since that time.

The add-ons have now been removed, restoring the cabin to its original appearance.
