The possibilities are endless when it comes to finding a lake, river, or creek to explore in Sauk County. Both private and public lakes exist in Sauk County. Many of the lakes in Sauk County are not suitable for swimming but offer an array of fishing possibilities. Others offer beaches with roped swimming areas, and excellent opportunities for water recreation.

The streams, rivers and creeks in Sauk County are often navigable and contain one or more different species of fish.  Over 49 streams, rivers and creeks are named in Sauk County. The Wisconsin River and Baraboo River are the two major recreational waterways in the county, with many freshwater fish located in the Wisconsin River.
