Cassell Prairie Lilac Hedge

The Cassell Prairie is an area along the Wisconsin River in southern Sauk County. The prairie was named for the first occupant of the area, Dr. James Cassell. Because Cassell was not a farmer, he sold off the rich land to settlers who planned to farm. Cassell Prairie is surrounded by high sandstone bluffs on one side and the Wisconsin River on the other. At one time there was a village of Cassell which had a post office in the home of the Pierce family, a store, a one room school, a mill and a blacksmith shop. Three ferries on the Wisconsin River brought people and supplies to and from the area.
All that is left of the village is a marker where the post office once was. However, the beautiful bluffs and the Wisconsin River carry the memories of time.
