Sauk County Poor Farm Fire Department

This building is known as the "Fire Department" on the grounds which are now known as the Sauk County Health Care Center, formerly the Sauk County Poor Farm and Asylum. The building was built in 1921 of red brick with a native sandstone foundation which included a dressed sandstone watertable course. It is an example of vernacular architecture with a jerkin or clipped roof.

The building was erected with the assistance of the infirmed residents of Sauk County . Residing around this building were 600+ residents who lived in five red brick buildings. This was a self-sufficient community that asked little from the communities surrounding it nor from county tax dollars.

The building still houses the original horse-drawn hose wagon which was purchased for the Poor Farm's Fire Department.
