Painted Forest

Located in the hamlet of Valton, in the Township of Woodland, this building was erected in the late 19th century by the Modern Woodmen of America (a fraternal life insurance company), to serve as a lodge (a/k/a a camp) for their ritualistic initiations and regular meetings. The building also served the general populace as a social and community center and as town hall. The building's unusual name is derived from the unique murals which adorn the walls, painted by itinerant artist, Ernest Hupenden. Several decades ago the murals were restored by the Kohler Foundation, Inc. Now a museum, The Painted Forest is maintained by the Upper Baraboo Valley Historical Society and is open to the public on Saturdays from 1:00-3:00 during, June, July and August.
