Throwback!
Here’s a throwback photo and a trivia question! Pictured at the bottom of this page is the White Mound village, taken in the early 1900s. What was the original name of this village?

If you guessed Billy Town, you’re correct! The village of White Mound was originally called Billy Town, named after resident William (Billy) Welch who opened a general store there in 1899. The store was on the first floor of the building and had living quarters and a post office on the floor above it. The building burned down in 1901 and was rebuilt later that year. However, it burned down again in 1921 on Halloween night and was not rebuilt again.

The village flourished from the 1880s to the 1930s, but all remnants are gone now. In this photo you can see a creamery, a blacksmith shop, the general store, and a tavern/dance hall. Do any details in the photo stand out to you?

It's time to "rock" at White Mound County Park!

We are excited to introduce a new long-term event, which is a rock painting station inside of the Sauk County Parks and Recreation office. Put on your creative cap to paint a design on your rock, then place it on the path outside of the office for everyone to see!

This station will be available during office hours until September 18, 4:00 PM CST. Supplies, including rocks, will be provided.

Rock on, everyone!
