Clean Sweep Alternatives

NEXT CLEAN SWEEP EVENT WILL BE

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 30, 2023 FROM 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Clean Sweep is an opportunity for homeowners, agricultural enterprises, and businesses to dispose of hazardous products and items that pose an environmental risk, such as pesticides and toxic cleaning products.  Hazardous waste will be collected at no charge, however, there are fees for tires, some electronic items and appliances.

Latex paint and motor oil will no longer be accepted at the Sauk County Clean Sweep events. Latex paint is non-hazardous, but it must be solidified before throwing away.  It’s easy to dry out:  If you have a small amount, simply remove the lid and allow it to dry outside.  Mix larger amounts with cat litter or a paint drying product sold at hardware stores.  Never dispose of liquid paint in your trash.

Used motor oil may be taken to the Sauk County Highway shop during their drop off hours, Monday–Thursday from 8:00 am–3:00 pm. For more information please contact the Highway Shop at (608) 355-4856.

Resource Solutions handles disposal of electronic items and appliances.  Fees may apply.  Contact Resource Solutions at (608) 244-5451 for more information and pricing.  Cash, credit, or checks payable to Resource Solutions will be collected at drop-off. A touch free payment option will also be available for those who would like to pay by card.

Pharmaceuticals, IVs, and needles will not be accepted. Residents can drop off unwanted medications at various police departments throughout the county and at the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department.

Other items that Clean Sweep cannot accept include mattresses, furniture, explosives, detonators, blasting caps, radioactive materials including smoke alarms, infectious and biological waste, compressed gas cylinders, asbestos, demolition materials, recyclables, and yard and household waste.

For more information regarding the Sauk County Clean Sweep Program, contact the Land Resources and Environment Department at (608) 355-3245 or conservation@saukcountywi.gov.

Alternative Disposal Options to Clean Sweep

and What to Do with Items That Cannot be

Taken During Clean Sweep

Sauk County residents with unused chemicals, paint, or batteries can dispose of them in a safe and environmentally sound manner at a Hazardous Waste Clean Sweep Program. This program is held annually, which can leave Sauk County residents holding onto their waste for up to months at a time. This list of alternative disposal methods is for county residents to use as a resource tool when looking for disposal methods for waste or when the local Clean Sweep is not available.

DANE COUNTY

CLEAN SWEEP DROP-OFF SITE

AVAILABLE ALL YEAR

Sauk County and Dane County are working together to provide Sauk County residents the opportunity to dispose of their household hazardous waste at the Dane County Clean Sweep facility through a new voucher program. Sauk County residents who would like to participate in this program should come to the Sauk County Land Resources and Environment Department, located in the West Square Building at 505 Broadway Street, Ste 248, Baraboo, to complete a voucher form to utilize the Dane County Clean Sweep facility to dispose of their household hazardous waste. Please be sure to bring all materials when applying for the voucher program. All materials for disposal through the voucher program need to be approved by LRE staff. Once participants receive the approved voucher from Sauk County, they are then able to attend the Dane County Clean Sweep facility. Participants with the Sauk County voucher are required to pay a $10.00 fee upon arrival at the Dane County Clean Sweep instead of the $75.00 fee for out-of-county participants.

Sauk County residents are limited to one voucher per household per year and must use their voucher within 30 days of approval by the Sauk County Land Resources and Environment Department. This voucher program is for household hazardous wastes only. Any businesses, including agricultural businesses, will be classified as very small quantity generators (VSQGs) and will need to contact Dane County Clean Sweep to register and set up an appointment. For any VSQGs there is a per pound charge. Latex paint, motor oil, and electronics are not accepted with this voucher program.

To prepare for your Dane County Clean Sweep facility visit, please make sure to package any materials in boxes or rigid totes to keep products upright and prevent spills, keep materials in their original containers, and do not mix materials or co-mingle your waste in plastic bags. If you have questions on the Dane County Clean Sweep site, please contact (608) 838-3212.

LATEX PAINT - At home disposal methods

Return it: If you have a full, unopened can of a stock color (not custom tinted paint), check with your dealer or retailer to see if you can return it for a refund.

Use it up: The best thing to do with usable latex paint is to use it up.  Apply a second coat or touch up area that needs improvement.

Share it:  If you cannot use leftover latex paint, try to share it with a neighbor, friend, or community group.  Make sure that any product you provide is in the original container with the label intact and not contaminated with other products.

Evaporate it:  Latex paint products cannot be disposed of in liquid form in most landfills.  Unusable latex paint can be safely disposed of by allowing the liquid to evaporate.  When the paint has hardened completely, it may be placed in the regular trash.

To evaporate small amounts of latex paint:

Move paint container to a sheltered, secure, outdoor area away from flames, children and pets.  Locked screen porches and balconies work well.  Some old latex paint contains mercury, so it is important to dry out paint in a safe, well-ventilated area.

Remove the lid and let paint dry in the can.  Stirring the paint occasionally will speed up the drying process.

Discard the can of dried paint in the trash.  Leave lid off can so the trash collector can see that the paint is dry.

To evaporate larger amounts of latex paint:

Line a medium-size cardboard box with a heavy plastic trash bag, and place it in a secure, well-ventilated area away from flames, children, and pets.

Pour Latex paint into the lined cardboard box.

Add an equal amount of kitty litter or Oil Dry ® .

Mix the paint and dry material by stirring with a stick.  Stirring the mixture every few days will speed up the drying process.

When the mixture is hard and dry, remove the bag from the box and place it in the trash.

10 cans of paint or less disposal methods:

Purchase a commercial paint hardener and follow the label directions.

Evaporate the paint.

10 to 25 cans of paint disposal method:

Line one or two medium-size boxes with thicker sheet plastic.  Pour contents of cans into boxes.  Add an absorbing agent such as kitty litter, vermiculite, or ground corn cobs.  Place the boxes in the sun or a warm area and stir frequently until paint hardens.  Toss box into trash when mixture is dry.

More than 25 can of paint disposal method:

Follow technique as listed for 10 to 25 cans but use a larger number of boxes.

SMOKE ALARMS

  • Smoke alarms that contain a small amount of radioactive material will be labeled and should be returned to manufacturer for disposal.  Otherwise, smoke detectors may be disposed in the trash.

Return to manufacturer - The majority of smoke detectors sold in the United States are made by First Alert and the Kidde Corporation. They will recycle them if you return them at your expense and pay $1.00 for a disposal fee.  In order to use their system, you must call them at 1-800-323-9005 (First Alert) or 1-800-880-6788 (Kidde) and set up an account to pay either by credit card or check. Many other smoke detectors are made by a Canadian firm called American Sensors.  You can contact them at 1-800-387-4219 for information. Both First Alert and American Sensors sell detectors under many different brand names, and can dispose of any of them.
