November 21, 2016
Board members Present: Peggy Heidenreich, Barbara Morford, David Wernicke, Pat Andreesen, Judy Ashford, Sue Meise, and Terrance Slack.
Librarians Present: Mark Ibach, SCLS; Raina Roloff, North Freedom; Sue Ann Kucher, Reedsburg; Jennifer Endres Way, Prairie du Sac; Meg Allen, Baraboo; Nicholas Studnicka, Plain; Emily Judd, Sauk City; Craig Braunschweig, Rock Springs; Pam Thompson, LaValle.
- Judy Ashford called the meeting to order and verified compliance with the open meetings law at 9 a.m.
- Meise moved and Wernicke seconded a motion to adopt the agenda. Passed unanimously.
- Wernicke moved and Meise seconded a motion to approve the minutes. Passed unanimously.
- Mark Ibach from SCLS reported on their plan to hire a services consultant improve use of available data and work as a resource for librarians. Reedsburg received LSTA funds for digitization of historical materials. DPI is working through a redesign process to look at system services.
- Librarians’ Report:
Prairie du Sac: Jennifer Endres Way reported on Highlights: Had 75 adults attend a Chad Lewis: Wisconsin's Most Haunted Locations programs. 49 high school students attended "Pizza and Pages" program, a new offering for High School students. 64 people (41 kids and 23 adults) attended “Reptile Appreciation program” for school-age children held on a no school day. 77 people (50 kids and 27 adults) attended “Bats” held as an early release program in the afternoon after school got out early. UPCOMING EVENTS:Wed 11/23 is an "Appy Hour" program for kids grades K-5 on an early release day. We'll have a bunch of iPads to explore with and do some crafts to tie in with them! For teens, we are having Gingerbread Houses (12/06) and Lego Games (12/13) We are collaborating with the Sauk City Library and have held two Community Conversations. A 3rd is planned for Wednesday, November 30 from 6-7:30 pm at the Ruth Culver Community Library. We are also conducting a patron survey thru the end of November. We are hosting a Holiday Crafts for Adults program on 11/29. A quilt raffle is being held to raise funds for the library by the Friends. Tickets are $2 each or 3/$5 and the drawing will be held 11/29.
Sauk City: Emily Judd reported on recent programs: The library was a Wisconsin Science Festival site. Piloting a Bingo program. Participated in the Sauk Prairie Holiday Lights Parade with decorated book carts with the theme Polar Express. Great turnout for Fantastic Beast program featuring magic wands, beasts, and a photo booth, started a monthly Crafternoon program. Upcoming Programs: Santa Storytime, Holiday Cookie Exchange, Preschool New Year’s Eve Countdown to Noon. Activities: Staff toured SCLS Delivery and the Sequoya Branch Library, held Community Conversations for the Strategic Plan, Emily attended DPI’s New Director Boot Camp, increased audiobook circuit, new landscaping, updated sign, new accessible door to lower level, and new carpet and paint soon. New microfilm reader available soon.
Rock Springs: Craig Braunschweig reported on flooding, discarding unused inventory, order new materials, Jerry Apps author program and updating policies and the strategic plan.
LaValle: Pam Thompson reported on starting a teen advisory group, their teen Halloween party. Pam is leaving LaValle to work at the Baraboo library, they are looking to hire a new director.
North Freedom: Raina Roloff reported on their participation in the community’s Kindersale, serving wine as a fundraiser, their monthly game nights, January paint night, and a donation received to preserve their historical collection from the Kohler Wolf Foundation
Reedsburg: Sue Ann Kucher reported on programs: Adults at Play memory games and smartphone basics, hosted a local history summit, hired a part-time circulation assistant, upgrading AV equipment, their fall Friends’ auction, their digitization grant, and attendance at WLA.
Baraboo: Meg Allen reported on continuing projects including: their building project with a recommendation due in January, redesign of their website, improvements to their reading room including new chairs, paint, carpet and a fireplace insert, their December bakesale, turkey bingo, donated piano and duet concert, and new sound system purchased with Sauk County Technology funds.
Plain: Nicholas Studnicka reported on changes made to the bookcases and the children’s area creating more space for kids and shelves, weeding non-fiction, organize their Wisconsin history collection, purchasing 2 new staff computers with Sauk County Technology funds, his attendance at the DPI new directors boot camp and the all directors meeting, a program partnering with the 4H for drone night, their Friends sale, Pies, Puzzles, Pages, and Pottery, and their senior movie with a catered meal.
- 2017 Budget Disbursement: The Board discussed the proposed Sauk County Library Board 2017 Budget. Andreesen moved and Morford seconded to approve the Sauk Conty Library Board 2017 Budget as presented. Passed unanimously. Distribution of Sauk County Technolody funds: Morford moved and Meise seconded to distribute technology funds equally between all libraries located wholly in Sauk County, with the exception of Wisconsin Dells. Motion passed unanimously. The Board asked the librarians to report on their plans to use the technology funds at the next meeting.
- Next meeting date: Tuesday, January 24 at 9 a.m. in Rock Springs for election of officers, review of by-laws and new member orientation.
- Adjournment: Slack moved and Morford seconded to adjourn. Motion passed unanimously.
