Business Items
Kathryn Schauf, Sauk County Administrative Coordinator, gave a brief presentation and summary of the County’s 2014 proposed budget.
Presentation and discussion of “The New Economic Reality” with Dan Thompson, League of Wisconsin Municipalities Executive Director; Rick Stadelman, Wisconsin Towns Association Executive Director; Jon Hochkammer, Wisconsin Counties Association Legislative Director; local elected officials, and participants.
Key points
• Wisconsin population is getting older – both as a function of the aging population and from the outflow of youth from the state.
• Wisconsin provides great education, but there is a net outflow of well-educated youth. Wisconsin has high employment, but low personal incomes.
• Wisconsin’s economy is traditionally built on manufacturing and agriculture. Diversified jobs in up-and-coming fields are needed. The State needs to develop jobs and the type of environment to retain and attract youth with higher education.
• The role of schools is integral to the economy. However, schools are experiencing huge increases in free and reduced lunch utilization.
Motion by Wenzel, second by Lombard, to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Joan Fordham
Finance Committee Secretary
