Waste and Nuisances

Our environmental health team is in charge of regulating and enforcing Sauk County Chapter 28, Public Health Nuisance Ordinance. The ordinance is meant to regulate such matters as improper disposal of waste, discharge of toxic substances, dilapidated buildings/structures, and accumulation of decaying animal carcasses, plant matter, or other materials. Chapter 28 also deals with pollution of water supplies from sewage, industrial waste, fertilizer, and other substance harmful to human beings.

We receive complaints and concerns from the general public and other Sauk County agencies. Once a complaint or concern is recorded, we investigate the seriousness and scope of the problem at hand. After the investigation, we evaluate whether an action needs to be taken. We often work with Corporation Council to write orders of abatement. We are committed to up-holding Chapter 28 with professionalism, timeliness, and an evidence based practice.

If you would like to report a potential human health hazard, please contact us at (608)355-3290. Follow up will be made by Public Health Department staff to determine whether the issue falls under the human health hazard definition. The Public Health Department has the authority to issue orders for cleanup and, if necessary, is also authorized to issue a citation under the Human Health Hazard Ordinance if the violation is not remedied.
