Easter Seals Legacy Corps Program

At this time we are beginning the recruitment period for our second year.  We are in search of families to receive services through this program. The Legacy Corps program is a FREE service that provides a break to the caregivers of military families and Veterans. The goal of the program is to relieve some of the stress related to caring for a family that may be experiencing deployment, reintegration, or caring for an injured Veteran. The hope is to allow that caregiver an opportunity to leave the household, relieve some of the stress they're experiencing, and build a stronger family bond. The Legacy Corps program accomplishes this by providing a well-trained, qualified AmeriCorps member to serve the family for 8-10 hours per week for one year for FREE. AmeriCorps members will be trained to provide respite services such as:

• Light cooking & cleaning
• Assistance with other household chores
• Walking/Exercising
• Storytelling/Journaling to improve or maintain cognitive functioning
• Assistance with running errands
• Transportation to appointments
• Information dissemination/resources for military families & veterans
• And much more, depending on what the family needs!

We are also beginning our search for more volunteers to become AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps members must commit to 450 hours over one year of service (7-10 hrs/wk). They will receive up-to-date training on First Aid, CPR, and Non-violent Crisis Intervention, as well as training on how to address the various challenges and barriers our veterans face on a day-to-day basis. After receiving 20 hours of pre-service training, the members will be matched with a veteran or military family that is nearest to them and that requires the type of support the member is comfortable providing. Along with the extensive training the member receives, they will also get a monthly living allowance of $190, and will be eligible for an educational award of $1,468 after completion of the program.
