Discussion and Possible Action on Alice in Dairyland Scholarship Recommendations and Selctions (tabled from March 2014)
Five (5) applicants were referred to the UW Extension Arts & Culture Committee for consideration for an Alice in Dairyland scholarship. All five applicants were deemed qualified for the scholarships and due to the fact that the Alice in Dairyland fund is being paid down and will be taken off of county books when funds are exhausted, it was suggested that the total amount currently being held for Alice scholarships be distributed this year (2014).
Motion by Detter, second by Dietz to award Sally Albers, Katelyn Greenwood, Nicholas Gurgel, Rachel Leege and Lindsey Lehman equal scholarship amounts and exhaust the Alice in Dairyland Scholarship line item. Motion carried.
Discussion and Possible Action on UW Extension Continuity of Operations Report
The Continuity of Operations report was given to the committee members. Discussion ensued regarding floaters and substitutes when regular County employees are absent from their jobs for extended periods for various reasons.
Sue Nagelkerk reported that the Continuity of Operations report had already been given to Kathy Schauf. No action was required.
Discussion and Possible Action of the Request for UW Extension’s Involvement to Plan the Wisconsin Counties Association (WCA) Annual Meeting in Wisconsin Dells, Fall 2014
The WCA Annual Conference will be at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, September 14 – 16, 2014. UW Extension has once again been asked to work with Marty Krueger and Kathy Schauf to coordinate the Welcome Table and volunteers to help with the Spouse/Guest tours.
This task historically falls to Lynn Zick, but it takes many hours to pull this all together. It was suggested that a multi-department committee be put together to help Lynn with the legwork and planning. Donna Stehling will be the liaison to suggest this and find out if there is budgetary money for incidental expenses.
The idea was brought up to feature the Wisconsin River, the Sauk Prairie and Kilbourn dams, and the Baraboo River as the cornerstone of the Welcome Area. Lynn will be in conversation with Marty and Kathy to get their thoughts on this idea.
It was deemed necessary to have cheese curds and chocolate for sampling at the Welcome Table.
Discussion and Possible Action on Meg Sage’s Request for Committee Approval for Out-of-State Travel for Fundamentals for Volunteer Management Workshop
Meg Sage has been selected to be on the North Central Region Writing Workshop Panel which will be meeting April 28 through May 2, 2014, in Minnesota. There is no cost to Sauk County for her expenses.
Jenny Erickson had brought this discussion to the committee at the March 19, 2014, meeting; however, action was not brought before the committee to approve the request. Motion by Detter, second by Stehling to approve out-of-state travel for Meg Sage to attend the Fundamentals for Volunteer Management Course Development Workshop. Motion carried.
Discussion and Possible Action on a Request from Sue Nagelkerk for Funding to Purchase Copies of The Kindness Curriculum for Sauk County Child Care Providers
Sue Nagelkerk gave a presentation to the committee on materials she plans on using in her upcoming child care provider training on teaching civility (kindness). She is requesting money to purchase 30 copies of The Kindness Curriculum to be given to the attendees at her four hour training session.
Motion by Detter, second by Stehling to approve the purchase of the materials with a request that the providing company be asked for better shipping rates; the current amount requested is 10% of the net order and is quite expensive. Motion carried.
Agents Monthly Reports
Katie Pfeiffer, Agriculture Agent
Katie reported on her work in Spring Green regarding the nitrate concerns in drinking water. She has been meeting with farms and farmers in a target area to gauge nitrogen applications and efficiency.
Discussion and Possible Action on a Good Idea Grant Financial Form developed by John Dietz
John Dietz gave a presentation of how the financial form he developed in Microsoft Excel works. Discussion ensued as to how this tool will assist the UW Extension Arts & Culture Committee in their assessment of submitted Good Idea Grants. The form will be looked at further and slight changes made before being provided to Good Idea Grant applicants.
Consideration of Applications for Good Idea Grants:
None
Upcoming Meeting: Wednesday, MAY 14, 2014 @ 9:00AM – Circus World Museum for the committee meeting and preview of the exhibit opening on May 17, 2014, that was funded in part by an AHHP grant in 2013.
