UW Extension, Arts and Culture Committee

Minutes of the Regular Meeting

September 11, 2013

Members present:  Judy Ashford, Joan Smoke, John Dietz, Donna Stehling, Mark “Smooth” Detter

Members absent:   None

Guests Present:      Al Anderson

UWEX Staff Present:  Sue Nagelkerk, Katie Pfeiffer

Call to Order

            The meeting was called to order at 9:00AM by Chair Ashford.

Certification of Open Meeting Notice

            Requirements of the Open Meeting Law were met.

Approval of Agenda

Detter requested to add a “moment of silence” to reflect in remembrance of 9-11 to the  agenda.  Motion made by Smoke, second by Stehling to approve the addition to the agenda.  Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes of Last Meeting

Dietz requested correction to change his title to bookkeeper in the minutes under Wormfarm Institute.   Motion made by Stehling, second by Smoke to approve the corrected minutes of the regular meeting of August 14, 2013.  Motion carried.

Public Comment:

Communications:

Moment of silence taken to reflect in remembrance of 9-11.

Review 2013 Budget and Approval of Vouchers

UW Extension:    Motion was made by Dietz, second by Smoke to approve the vouchers for the month of August in the amount of $11,655.04.  Motion carried. 

Arts & Culture:   Motion was made by Smoke, second by Dietz to approve the vouchers for the month of August in the amount of $100.00.  Motion carried. 

2014 budget update:  Administrative team review of budget went well.

UW Extension, Arts & Culture Updates/Reports

4-H Agent Position:  Preliminary interviews to be done in Madison on Sept. 24.  Final interviews are scheduled to be held in Sauk County on Wednesday, October 9th, at an extended meeting of the UW Extension, Arts & Culture Committee.

Nagelkerk will inquire with Matt Hanson whether the state will consider allowing the committee to recommend adjusting the starting salary for this position at a higher rate since turnover has been problematic.

Agents Monthly Reports

Sue Nagelkerk, FLE

  • Chancellor’s Award being given to Fred Hebert, WI Community Action Council in Wisconsin Dells; nominated by Nagelkerk
  • Cow-o-nomics video
  • Summer lunch bunch in Wisconsin Dells area served 1,652 lunches this summer

Katie Pfeiffer, Ag Agent

  • Emerald Ash Borer update; will continue to monitor and work with communities
  • Nitrogen rate study in Spring Green

Consideration of Applications for Good Idea Grants

Genevieve Davis - requested $495 to help fund “Secret Life, Secret Death” readings.   Committee was informed there was no final report on previous grant given in 2010, which technically disqualifies them for any further grants.  However, committee would like additional information on who is getting the lecture fees because grants are not awarded to benefit the recipient and possibly the organization should be applying.   Motion made by Dietz, second by Detter  to deny funding $495 to Genevieve Davis.  Motion carried.

Committee requested two statements be added to the good idea grant website/application. 

  1.  Once you receive a grant, you will not be eligible to receive a grant for the same idea.
  2.  These grants are not awarded to sustain existing programs.

 

Sauk County Writers Club - requested $500 to help fund visiting poets at the Village book Smith in Baraboo.   Letter stating  program has been funded in the past and we encourage them to become self-sustaining; not enough information regarding number and cost of poets.   Motion made by Detter, second by Stehling  to deny funding $500 to the Sauk Co. Writers Club.    Motion carried.

Upcoming Meeting:  Wednesday, OCTOBER 9, 2013 @ 9:00AM – UWEX Conference Room –       3rd Floor of West Square Building; 4-H/Youth Dev.  Agent interviews will follow regular committee meeting.

Motion was made by Stehling, second by Smooth to adjourn the meeting.   Motion carried.
