Panel Members Present: Linda Borleske, Dale Jaedike, Mike Jacobs, Verlyn Mueller

Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 12:15 PM by Nagelkerk and the requirements of the Open Meeting Law were met.
Introductions
Election of Chairperson
Motion made by Borleske, to have Dale Jaedike serve as chair of the panel for the meeting. Motion carried.
Review of Process Procedure
Dale Jaedike gave panel basic decision-making guidelines:
• The proposals stand by themselves, based on their own merit
• The funding is solid
• The event must take place in Sauk County
• In kind 50% the first year, 25% second year
Consideration of grant awards and development of recommendations
Chair Jaedike suggested that the Access Sheet be used for the order.
The panel reviewed all nine grants and discussed the pros and cons of each application.
The following are the funding recommendations and comments for each application:
A.) Baraboo Range Preservation Association requested $1,000 and the panel recommended fully funding for this project. Motion by Mueller, second by Borleske. Motion carried.
Pros:
- Fiscally responsible
- Innovative
- All age groups
- Good support locally
- Speakers donate fees
- Good return
- Kids away from electronics
- Not new, but excellent
- Educational
Cons:
- Same location (Reedsburg?)
- Small audience (the choir)
- Needs better advertising (limited)
- Plan ahead for 2012
B.) Circus World Museum Foundation, Inc. requested $5,000 and the panel recommended fully funding this project. Motion by Mueller, second by Borleske. Motion carried.
Pros:
- Creative (Wild West)
- Annie Oakley (women)
- Partnering
- Well planned
- Popular appeal
- Hiring locals
- Researched the past
- Baraboo tourists
Cons:
- State organization rather than local
- Smaller fee would be preferred (large families)
- No cash income in budget
- “Free days” to local residents
C.) Reedsburg Area Chamber of Commerce requested $1,000 and the panel recommended fully funding this project. Motion by Borleske, second by Mueller. Motion carried.
Pros:
- Interesting
- Many different activities
- Creative
- 8 weeks
- Not just a stand-alone
Cons:
- Didn’t leverage resources
- No business contributions
- Financial project/grant connection not there
- Financial – one source
- We fund performances, etc. not advertising
D.) Reedsburg Area Historical Society requested $2,000 and the panel recommended fully funding this project. Motion by Borleske, second by Mueller. Motion carried; one abstention.
Pros:
- Locals do demos
- Family focus
- Efforts to make it financially feasible
- Great dates
- Excellent facility
- Active learning
- Keep Historical Society going
Cons:
- Volunteers from UW History classes? No contact; should have been done previously
E.) Reedsburg Historic Preservation Commission requested $2,300 and the panel recommended not funding this project. Motion by Mueller, second by Borleske to deny the funding. Motion carried.
Pros:
- Creative
- Skilled
- Preservation
- Impact future generations
- Every community should review this periodically
Cons:
- Audience limited
- Get permission on privately-owned buildings; talk to owners; no letters of support form owners
- Survey, rather than a class/meeting to educate
- Impact low
Comments:
- Chart interest, then resubmit
- NOTE: National Register does not preserve the building; can be restrictive of what you do to your property
F.) Sauk Prairie Area Historical Society requested $5,000 and the panel recommended fully funding this project. Motion by Borleske, second by Jaedike. Motion carried; 1 abstention.
Pros:
- Creative
- All ages
- Good support
- Kid found
- Funding diversity
- Nice location
- Free of charge
Cons:
- More in-kind
- Ho-Chunk connection? Partnering?
G.) Sauk Prairie Conservation Alliance requested $4,950and the panel recommended not funding this project. Motion by Borleske, second by Mueller to deny the funding. Motion carried.
Pros:
- County-wide volunteers
- What you are trying to accomplish
- School outreach
- Great idea
Cons:
- Funding a position?
- Emphasis lacking on deliverables
H.) Taliesin Preservation requested $1,500 and the panel recommended fully funding this project. Motion by Borleske, second by Jaedike. Motion carried.
Pros:
- Partnerships with schools
- Children education/influence
- Timeline
- Good idea!
Cons:
- Think about possibly county-wide
- Expand? Adults interested, too!
H.) Wormfarm Institute requested $1,500 and the panel recommended fully funding this project. Motion by Holmes, Borleske, second by Mueller. Motion carried.
Pros:
- Clear
- Topics good
- Grant well-written
Cons:
- Financially sustainable?
- Poster – no locations
- Not new
Final Recommendations: No need to prioritize.
The panel also recommended Ideas for Process:
-Mail the panelists the guidelines as well.

Motion by Borleske, second by Mueller to adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 2:17 PM.
