FREE STEPPING ON CLASS

TO BE OFFERED IN WISCONSIN DELLS

BARABOO, WISCONSIN; August 8, 2014 – Stepping On, a class designed to help people at risk of falling, will be held free of charge at the Kilbourn Public Library, 620 Elm Street, Wisconsin Dells, beginning Tuesday, September 30.  Classes will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Tuesday, September 30 through November 11.  The program is co-sponsored by the Aging & Disability Resource Centers (ADRC) of Sauk and Columbia Counties.

The seven-week course will cover improving balance and strength, home modifications, community safety, vision, medication review, safe footwear and sleep habits.  People who are at risk of falling, have a fear of falling or who have fallen one more times are encouraged to attend.

“Stepping On is an evidence-based program that engages and empowers older adults to carry out health behaviors that reduce the risks of falls, improve self-management and increase quality of life,” explained ADRC of Sauk County Nutrition & Prevention Specialist Laura Geick, one of the Stepping On co-facilitators.

“Classes are highly participative,” said Shari Genrick, Human Service Aide, ADRC of Columbia County, Stepping On co-facilitator. “Mutual support and success build participants’ confidence to manage their health behaviors to reduce the risk of falls and maintain active and fulfilling lives.”

Falls are the leading cause of injury and death among individuals age 65 and older. Up to 30% of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures or head traumas. Even if no injuries occur after a fall, many people develop a fear of falling, which in turn often causes them to limit their activities. This can result in reduced mobility and loss of physical conditioning, increasing their risk of falling.

For more information or to register for the course, call (608) 355-3289 or (800) 482-3710 or visit here.
