DO YOU HAVE UNCLAIMED PROPERTY?

Is the State Holding Your Money?

Unclaimed property can be in the form of uncashed checks, utility deposits, stocks, bonds, dividend checks, items found in abandoned safe deposit boxes and much more.  After a business has held unclaimed property for 5 years, by state statute they must turn it over to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue where it is held until the rightful owner comes forward to claim the asset.

To find out if you have a claim, contact the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (click on web link below).

Sauk County Unclaimed Funds

Pursuant to Wis.Stats. 59.66(2), the purpose of this state statute is to return money to its rightful owner.

Generally, county and municipal unclaimed property consists of uncashed checks that are older than 1 year. When these funds are reported as unclaimed, municipal treasurers track and report this to the County Treasurer for public notice posting of all unclaimed funds in the paper and online.

Claimants have 6 months after the official posting to claim funds from the Sauk County Treasurer. After the 6 months, funds are then turned over to the Dane County Treasurer.  Claimants then have another 10 years to claim funds from the Dane County Treasurer.

See the Sauk County 2023 Unclaimed Funds report listed below.  If you are listed in this report, you will need to fill out the affidavit form for unclaimed funds (see below) and bring to the Sauk County Accounting Department.  You will be required to verify your identity and that you are the person for whom the funds are being held. Bring valid identity documents showing your full name, current residential address, signature and photo. This could be a passport, Wisconsin Driver’s License, Wisconsin ID, or other government-issued identification.  Any inquiries should be made to the Sauk County Accounting Department  608-355-4825.
