Vehicle vs. Amish Buggy Fatal * UPDATE - Names Released*

* UPDATE - The name of the adult male involved in this incident is Daniel Kershner. The name of the juvenile female involved in this incident is Kristina Borntrager. *

 

On Wednesday, July 15th, 2026 at approximately 8:51 AM the Sauk County Dispatch Center received a report of a traffic crash on Highway 58 near Rabuck Road in the township of Ironton. It was reported that a truck had struck an Amish buggy and the buggy operator was critically injured. 

The investigation into the crash showed that a 2023 Ford F350 pulling a gooseneck dump trailer being operated by an 81 year old man from Viola, WI was northbound on Highway 58 just north of the intersection with Rabuck Road when it struck from behind an Amish horse and buggy being operated by a 13 year old female from LaValle, WI causing significant damage to the buggy. The female buggy operator was pronounced deceased on scene and the horse appeared to be uninjured. The buggy was outfitted with lights and a slow moving vehicle placcard and the female was wearing a high-visibility reflective vest. 

The truck operator remained on scene and is cooperating with detectives. The highway was shut down for several hours while deputies conducted their investigation of the scene and the investigation into this incident remains on going. Names of those involved are being withheld at this time. 

The Sauk County Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by Cazenovia Fire, Cazenovia EMS and the Sauk County Highway Department.
