Purpose
The resolution declares April as Fair Housing Month.
Background
Background: This year is the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended, known as the Federal Fair Housing Law, and it is the 53rd anniversary of the Wisconsin Open Housing Law. The Federal Government, through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, has declared April as Fair Housing Month. Fair housing occurs when people have a wide range of housing choices based on their income and needs regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, religion, ancestry, age, marital status, lawful source of income, disability, familial status, or status as a victim of domestic abuse, sexual abuse or stalking, and encourages fair housing opportunities for all citizens.
Fair housing means taking actions that assure people having housing choices and are not discriminated against in their housing transactions. Fair housing laws are enforced through education, outreach, research, and direct assistance to persons alleging discrimination.
Sauk County promotes activities that promote fair housing and is committed to highlight the Fair Housing Law, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended, and the Wisconsin Open Housing Law.
