NEWS RELEASE

December 2, 2013

On November 30, 2013, at approximately 8:22 p.m., the Sauk County Communications Center received a report of a multiple vehicle crash on USH 12 just north of Sauk Prairie Rd, in the Township of Prairie du Sac.  There were reported to be 7 people injured with one of the vehicles having rolled over, entrapping its occupants.

The initial investigation revealed a 2012 Honda Accord, operated by ERIK J. MICHELS, 23, Dane, WI, was traveling south bound on USH 12 and drifted over the centerline and into the north bound lane.  MICHELS struck the left rear of a north bound 2012 Ford F150, operated by LEONARD J. STATZ, 45, Prairie du Sac, Wi, causing the Ford to crash into the ditch.  MICHELS then struck another north bound vehicle, a 2010 Honda Accord, operated by ROBERT O. DESSAUER, 51, Baraboo, WI.  This collision caused DESSAUER’s vehicle to rollover in the ditch.  MICHELS’ vehicle then also came to rest in the ditch.

MICHELS received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital by EMS.  STATZ and a passenger of his vehicle received minor injuries and were not transported.  DESSAUER and the three other occupants of his vehicle were trapped inside and required extrication.  One of the occupants was taken to UW Hospital by Med Flight for non-life threatening injuries.  The other three were transported to the hospital by EMS, also with non-life threatening injuries.

Due to the magnitude of crash, emergency units from the Sauk Prairie Police Department, Sauk County Sheriff’s Department, Sauk City Fire Department, Sauk Prairie Ambulance Service, Prairie du Sac Fire Department, Baraboo Fire Department, Baraboo District Ambulance Service, Merrimac Fire Department, Plain Ambulance Service, Lodi Ambulance Service, Waunakee Ambulance Service, Middleton Ambulance Service, and UW Wisconsin Med Flight Helicopter were requested.

All of the occupants in the crash were wearing seat belts.  USH 12 was closed for almost 3 hours during the incident.  The crash remains under investigation by the Sauk County Reconstruction Team.
