Traffic Crash - FIrearm Discharge, Town of Ironton

NEWS RELEASE

TRAFFIC CRASH / FIREARM DISCHARGE TOWN OF IRONTON

On Sunday, May 29, 2022 at approximately 12:54 p.m., the Sauk County Communications Center was notified of a single vehicle traffic crash on La Rue Road north of Frank Road in the Town of Ironton.  The caller was a nearby homeowner who reported that a vehicle had gone into the ditch.  The caller then reported that the driver had exited the vehicle and walking toward their home while armed with a long gun and a handgun.  The suspect then approached the caller’s home and was standing on the porch upon the arrival of the first responding deputy.

The deputy engaged the suspect in verbal dialogue from a distance.  The suspect initially complied with the deputy’s directives and disarmed himself of the long gun.  The suspect then ran from one side of the home to the opposite side, out of the deputy’s view, and the deputy heard a single gunshot.  The suspect then returned to the other side of the home and the deputy again spoke with the suspect.  The suspect then complied with the deputy’s orders and was taken safely into custody.

The suspect has been identified as Matthew T. Krumpos, age 22.  Krumpos does not currently have a permanent address but has ties to the Baraboo and Portage areas.

The initial investigation has shown that the vehicle Krumpos was driving had been recently stolen from a residence in the village of Lake Delton.  Krumpos was driving southbound on La Rue Road when he failed to negotiate a corner, entered the west side ditch, crossed the roadway, and traveled off road on the east side of La Rue Road before becoming stuck in a field.  After the crash, Krumpos walked to the nearby home.  Krumpos fired one shot from a handgun into the occupied home.  No one was struck by the round and there were no injuries reported to any person related to this incident.

Krumpos was arrested and transported to the Sauk County Jail.  Numerous charges will be referred to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office, including Endangering Safety by Reckless Use of a Firearm.  Krumpos was also detained on a hold from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.  The Lake Delton Police Department and the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate Krumpos’ involvement in incidents in their respective jurisdictions and additional charges will be forwarded as they are developed by the ongoing investigations.
