Tactical Situation - Town of Sumpter

NEWS RELEASE

TACTICAL SITUATION – TOWN OF SUMPTER

On February 16, 2022 at approximately 2 p.m., deputies from the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in Bluffview Trailer Court located at S7559 USH 12 in the Town of Sumpter.  Deputies had received information that a 22-year-old male subject had returned to the residence, which was his home.  The man had an outstanding felony arrest warrant and had engaged in threatening behavior toward another person earlier in the day.

Deputies attempted contact with the suspect and were able to make verbal contact with him.  The suspect informed deputies that he was refusing to exit the home and claimed to be armed with a firearm.  The suspect threatened to harm law enforcement with the firearm.  During preliminary negotiations, the suspect was observed inside of the residence and he appeared to be armed with a handgun.

Due to the threats made against law enforcement, danger posed to the surrounding community, and the suspect’s refusal to comply with the deputies on scene, the Sauk County Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Critical Incident Negotiations (CIN) teams were requested to the scene.  Both teams are multi-agency teams with members from both the Sheriff’s Office and Police Departments within Sauk County.

CIN members attempted to negotiate with the suspect for several hours.  After these discussions failed to produce a safe, voluntary surrender, members of ERT introduced chemical munitions into the home.  ERT members eventually entered the home and were able to safely locate and arrest the suspect.  The suspect was arrested for the outstanding warrant and numerous additional charges will be referred to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.

Neither law enforcement nor the suspect were injured during this incident.

During this incident, the Sauk City Fire Department and Sauk Prairie Ambulance Service were staged nearby as a precautionary measure.

At approximately 8:15 pm, the situation had been resolved safely and access to the surrounding area was no longer limited by law enforcement activity.
