Sauk County Sheriff's K9 Cooper Retires

Sheriff Chip Meister is announcing the retirement of Sauk County Sheriff canine “Cooper”.  Cooper is an eight year old Belgian Malinois and is retiring as Sauk County’s most decorated canine after over 1,960 calls for service.  Cooper has been in service for 6 years but has been battling lymes disease for over three years.

Cooper is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, building searching, evidence searching, and handler protection.  Cooper is credited with over 635 narcotics arrests during his career and an estimated $105,000.00 in narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia being removed from the streets of Sauk County.  Cooper’s strong ability to track was shown regularly as he has over 70 successful tracks of lost or missing persons or of suspects that fled from law enforcement.

Cooper is one of two working canines at the Sauk County Sheriff’s office.  Canine Fedor was added in 2013.  Because canine calls for service have increased in each of the past 5 years, and because they have proven to be such a vital tool to the Sheriff’s Office on a daily basis, Sheriff Meister would like to add another canine to replace Cooper.  The cost of a new canine is around $14,000.00 and is made possible by citizen donations.  To donate to this program a check or money order can be made to the Sauk County K9 fund and dropped or mailed to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, 1300 Lange Court, Baraboo WI 53913.  An account is also set up through the Greater Sauk County Community Foundation at the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce Building, 600 West Chestnut Street, Baraboo WI 53913
