OWI Causing Injury

On Monday, April 4th, 2022 at approximately 9:35 AM the Sauk County Dispatch Center received a report of a one vehicle crash on State Highway 154 at the intersection with Short Road in the township of Washington. It was reported that there were two occupants trapped inside the vehicle and both had sustained injuries during the crash.

First arriving emergency personnel on scene located a 2006 Pontiac G6 with severe front end damage and both occupants needing extrication from the vehicle. The driver was identified as Joshua Goebel, age 21 of Richland Center. The passenger in the vehicle was a 17 year old juvenile female from Baraboo. Initial investigation revealed that the G6 was being driven at an extremely high rate of speed eastbound on State Highway 154 and failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway, striking a driveway culvert before coming to rest approximately 15 feet off the road. Information was received that this vehicle was also observed being driven at a high rate of speed just prior to the crash occurring. After the occupants had been extricated the juvenile female was transported to a Madison area hospital by Reedsburg EMS. Goebel was transported to the Reedsburg Area Medical Center by ambulance before being transferred to Madison.

While in contact with Goebel deputies on scene observed signs of alcohol impairment. A legal blood draw was completed a Goebel has been charged with Operating While Intoxicated Causing Injury. He also received numerous traffic citations as a result of the crash and more criminal charges may be forthcoming pending the ongoing investigation. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash and both occupants were wearing their seatbelts.

Assisting Sauk County Sheriff deputies on scene were members of the Hillpoint Fire Department, Hillpoint First Responders and Reedsburg EMS.
