Interstate Incident

Sunday, May 1, 2016 – The Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting multiple law enforcement agencies, including Columbia, Dane, and Sauk County Sheriff’s Offices, the WI State Patrol, and the West Allis Police Department on a multi-jurisdictional incident.

At 6:53 am, West Allis Police responded to a shooting in the 2300 block of S. 92nd Street, where a male was killed.  

At approximately 2:55 pm the Sauk County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a drive-by shooting on Interstate 90/94 near mile post 95.  The caller reported that there was one victim in a vehicle at that location.  Dells-Delton EMS and law enforcementfrom the Wisconsin State Patrol, Lake Delton Police Department, and the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office were immediately sent to the scene.

A witness then called 911 to report that they were following the suspect vehicle, a Chevrolet SUV, east bound on Interstate 90/94.  Troopers from Wisconsin State Patrol and deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office with a DNR Warden and a Lodi Police Officer intercepted the vehicle.  Road spikes were deployed and the vehicle was disabled.  The driver, a 20-year-old male from West Allis, exited the vehicle and began to walk toward law enforcement armed with a hand gun.  Despite verbal commands to stop, the suspect continued to advance toward law enforcement and two Columbia County deputies shot the suspect.   The suspect was transported to UW-Hospital by EMS.  His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.  

There were two male passengers inside the suspect vehicle, ages 30 and 34, who were not injured in the incident.  One was transported to Meriter Hospital as a precaution where he was treated and released.  Both men are now in the custody of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

The female shooting victim from Sauk County was initially transported by EMS to St. Clare Hospital, and then conveyed by Med Flight to UW Hospital.  Her condition is considered critical.
