FATAL CRASH – TOWN OF WASHINGTON

On July 19, 2023, at approximately 8:25 am, the Sauk County Communications Center was advised of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Highway 154 and State Highway 130 in the Town of Washington.  It was reported that the crash involved two commercial motor vehicles, both had rolled and sustained significant damage, and power lines were downed.  Hillpoint Fire Department, Reedsburg Area Ambulance Service, Alliant Energy, and Sauk County Sheriff’s Office personnel were immediately sent to the scene.

The initial investigation shows that a 2011 Freightliner semi-tractor hauling an empty flatbed trailer had been traveling south on County Highway G to continue straight onto STH 130 at the four-way intersection.  A 2017 Peterbuilt straight truck with a dump box (a dump truck) was traveling east on STH 154.  The Freightliner, which had a stop sign, entered the intersection into the path of the oncoming dump truck.  The dump truck collided with the semi-trailer and both vehicles overturned, coming to rest in the southeast corner of the intersection.  Both vehicles were occupied only by their respective drivers.

The operator of the dump truck, an 84-year-old male from Lone Rock, Wisconsin, died at the scene.  The operator of the semi-tractor, a 32-year-old male from Cape Coral, Florida, was not injured.  The names of those involved are being withheld at this time pending notification of family.

This crash remains under investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol. The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Hillpoint Fire Department and First Responders, Reedsburg Area Ambulance Service, Sauk County Highway Department, and Sauk County Coroner’s Office.
