NEWS RELEASE

CAR vs. PEDESTRIAN FATAL CRASH – VILLAGE OF WEST BARABOO

On July 8, 2017 at approximately 10:37 p.m., the Sauk County Communications Center was notified of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic crash on USH 12 (W. Pine St) at Berkley Blvd. in the Village of West Baraboo.  The initial report was that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian and that the pedestrian was unconscious.  Sauk County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, the Baraboo Fire Department, and the Baraboo District Ambulance Service were immediately sent to the scene.

The initial investigation revealed that a 2000 Toyota Camry operated by an 18 year-old female from Merrimac, WI was traveling southbound on USH 12.  A pedestrian, a 23 year-old female from Worth, IL, entered the roadway from a private business driveway on the west side of the road.  The pedestrian was traveling east and was not in a designated crosswalk.  The Toyota struck the pedestrian during a braking maneuver.  The pedestrian died at the scene.

Excessive speed and impairment do not appear to be factors related to the vehicle operator.  Impairment and sudden movement into traffic appear to be factors related to the pedestrian.  The names of the vehicle operator and deceased pedestrian are being withheld at this time pending notification of family.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Baraboo Fire Department, Baraboo District Ambulance Service, the Sauk County Highway Department, the Sauk County Coroner’s Office and the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office.
