Baraboo man arrested for Homicide By Intoxicated Operation Of Motor Vehicle

On February 26, 2015 at approximately 3:00 P.M. the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office arrested Matthew J Steinhorst, age 31, from Baraboo on a Bench Warrant issued by the Sauk County Circuit Court.  The warrant is based on a Criminal Complaint that charges Steinhorst with Homicide By Intoxicated Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Having Prior OWI Related Conviction, Homicide By Operation Of A Motor Vehicle While Having A Prohibited Alcohol Concentration, and Homicide By Operation Of A Motor Vehicle While Having A Detectable Amount Of A Restricted Controlled Substance.

The Criminal Complaint alleges Steinhorst was operating a vehicle on May 31, 2014 in the Town Of Excelsior at which time Steinhorst crashed the vehicle on Terrytown Road.  Steinhorst's passenger, James Wekekind, age 31, from Baraboo was fatally injured in the crash.  Lab results from the State Crime Lab indicated that the blood drawn from Steinhorst after the crash had an Ethanol concentration of .226g/100mL.

Steinhorst was incarcerated in the Sauk County Jail.  If convicted Steinhorst may be fined not more than $300,000 or imprisoned not more than 120 years or both.
