Arrest Made in Heroin Overdose Deaths

On Monday, June 1st, 2015 at 8:28 pm, the Sauk County Communications Center received a report of two deceased persons outside a residence on County Highway G in the Township of Woodland, Sauk County.

Initial investigation into this incident found that Richard Maurer, 55, and Diane Rogers, 51, were deceased, and that it appeared that heroin use was possibly involved. Both were residents at the address of the complaint.

Autopsies were performed at the VA Medical Center in Madison, WI the following day. No physical injuries or trauma were found on either person, and other signs indicated that the deaths may be toxicological in nature, which was later confirmed by toxicology results. The investigation continued in an effort to determine the source of the drug responsible for these deaths.

On Tuesday, July 15th, 2015, Sauk County Sheriffs Detectives, with the assistance of the Dodgeville Police Department, arrested Herbert C. Grosenheider, 29, of Dodgeville, WI for two counts of First Degree Reckless Homicide, under Wisconsin Statute 940.02 (2)(a), a class C Felony. Information gathered during the investigation revealed that Grossenheider procured the heroin in Madison, WI, and delivered it to Maurer and Rogers a short time prior to their deaths.

Grosenheider is being held in the Sauk County Jail pending a bail hearing. The investigation is continuing in this case and additonal charges or arrests may result.

If convicted, Grosenheider may be subject to a fine not to exceed $100,000.00 or imprisonment not to exceed 40 years or both.
