Frequently Asked Questions

Q) I want an attorney to represent me, but I can not afford one.

A) To see if you qualify for a State Public Defender, you must contact that agency, which is located in the City of Baraboo at 107 Third Street, 2nd Floor. Their phone number is (608) 355-3180.

Q) I have a traffic citation and would like to talk to the D.A.

A) The Court will automatically schedule a Pretrial Conference for any person who enters a not guilty plea. In all cases, if you have obtained a private attorney or the court has ordered a public defender to represent you (in a criminal cas), our office can not speak to you without your attorney present.

Q) But, what if I don't want to enter a not guilty plea?

A) The D.A. will not be able to confer with you until a full set of investigative law enforcement reports is received. Often a complete set of reports is not received until a not guilty plea is entered.

Q) Can I enter a plea to the Court via mail?

A) Yes but ONLY if you are charged with a forfeiture offense, such as a speeding ticket/citation, which is NOT considered a crime.  All Criminal Court hearings are MANDATORY appearances.

Q) I would like to request discovery for my case. (A copy of all investigative law enforcement reports)

A) The reports may be obtained after a charging decision has been made and a criminal complaint has been filed. The D.A.'s Office charges 30 cents plus postage & tax for each page copied and $10.00 plus postage & tax for any CD/DVD media.

Q) I would like to report a crime. Can you investigate this crime?

A) No, our office does not investigate crimes. You must report all crimes to your local police department or the Sauk County Sheriff's Department.

Q) I need an extension to pay my court fine.

A) You need to contact the Clerk of Court's Office for all issues regarding payments of fines.

Q) There is a warrant for my arrest. How can I take care of it?

A) Contact the Clerk of Court's Office who may direct you to the appropriate Judge's office.

Q) I lost my drivers license. How can I get an Occupational Driver's License?

A) You need to contact the Department of Transportation for that information.  You can also find forms to apply for an occupational license online.
