Mediation

Sauk County offers mediation through Family Court Services in the Office of the Family Court Commissioner for custody and placement issues in family court cases filed in Sauk County.

Mediation is a confidential, cooperative, problem solving process that allows parents to meet with a neutral third party, or mediator, to work on solutions to the issues that bring them to family court.   In many instances, parents can work with a mediator to find a solution acceptable to both of them and reduce or eliminate the need for court appearances.

Mediation is for communication and possible resolution of child custody and physical placement issues. It is not ordered for property division, maintenance, child support, or other financial matters; however, parties are free to retain a private mediator to resolve other issues.

Mediation is required by law in certain circumstances while a matter is pending in a family court case.  

In a contested pending matter, the court may order mediation, or a party may request court-ordered mediation:
