Vehicle Falls Into the Ice on Mirror Lake - UPDATE

Special News Release

On December 6, 2010, at 11:49 AM the Sauk County Communication Center received a 911 call from a subject who stated that he had fallen through the ice on Mirror Lake. During the call communication with the caller was lost.

The subject had told the dispatcher he was in the water at the boat landing. Emergency response personnel were dispatched to Mirror Lake State Park boat landing and the public boat landing on Lakeview Road.

A park ranger with the state Department of Natural Resources found the victim inside Mirror Lake State Park at the boat landing. Upon arrival the ranger found that the subject had driven onto the ice from the boat landing. His pickup truck had broken through the ice and was submerged to the top of the cab. Two rangers and a Sauk County sheriff’s deputy were able get out to the subject who was hanging onto the ice. They were able to get a hold of him and extricate him from the water turning him over to Dells - Delton EMS. The Sauk County Dive and Rescue Team entered the water to verify there was no one else inside the truck.

The patient was transported from the boat landing to the main parking lot and was transported by helicopter to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. The name of the individual is being withheld at this time.

The state DNR, Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, Delton Fire Department and Dells -Delton EMS all responded to the scene.

Traveling on lake or river ice is risky. The state DNR issued updated safety tips for the season on Dec. 3. That release is attached for informational purposes.
