STH 33 Crash

On June 11, 2016 at approximately 5:12 p.m. the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received notification of a motorcycle versus car traffic crash on STH 23-33 west of STH 136 in the Town of Reedsburg.  The initial report indicated that the motorcycle operator was lying in the roadway and that the car involved in the crash had overturned and was on its roof in the ditch.

Sauk County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, the Reedsburg Area Ambulance Service, and the Reedsburg Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.  The initial investigation revealed that a 1999 Honda Accord car operated by a 38 year old female from Reedsburg, WI and a 2013 Harley Davidson Road Glide Ultra motorcycle operated by a 45 year male from DeForest, WI were both traveling eastbound on STH 23-33.  The car had slowed in preparation of a left hand turn into a private driveway.  The motorcycle was attempting to pass the car on the left using the oncoming traffic lane in a marked “no passing” zone.  The car began the left turn across STH 23-33 and the motorcycle impacted the driver’s side of the car.  Post impact, the car spun, entered the north side ditch, and overturned coming to rest on its roof.  The motorcycle slid on its side continuing eastbound and the motorcycle operator was separated from the motorcycle.

The 45 year old male motorcycle operator sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to UW Hospital by UW Med Flight.  He was not wearing a helmet.  The 38 year old female car operator was treated at the scene and she was wearing a seat belt.

The names of both operators are being withheld at this time pending notification of family.

Improper overtaking and violating a no-passing zone were contributing factors in this crash.  Alcohol use is unknown at this time.  The crash remains under investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office and the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Reedsburg Area Ambulance Service, the Reedsburg Fire Department and UW Med Flight.
