Sauk County Sheriff's Department Receives Highway Safety Grant

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**

April 19, 2010

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Department is pleased to announce receiving a Highway Safety grant in the amount of $25,000.00 from the Wisconsin Bureau of Transportation Safety. This grant will target speed and aggressive driving on Interstate 90/94 from May 1, 2010 through September 30, 2010. This is in addition to the $25,000.00 Alcohol Enforcement grant for Alcohol Enforcement for 2010.
During 2008, speed-related crashes were listed as a contributing factor in almost 22% of all crashes, and 32% of all fatal crashes. 4-lane highways have proven to be problematic in recent years due to drivers continuing to push cruising speeds higher and higher. This enforcement will also be worked in conjunction with Wisconsin State Patrol and the Columbia, Dane, and Rock County Sheriff’s Departments to change this behavior through the use of highly visible enforcement efforts which are 3 or more squad cars deployed simultaneously in the targeted area. This Interstate Corridor grant money will provide the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department approximately 720 enforcement hours dedicated to this project throughout the summer.
