Plane Crashes Near the Dells/Baraboo Airport - UPDATED

NEWS RELEASE

On August 18, 2010 at 9:31 a.m., the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department Communication Center received a report of a possible plane crash at or near the Dells/Baraboo Airport. Subsequent callers indicated the possible crash was north of the Dells/Baraboo Airport. At 9:38 a.m., officers arrived on scene. Officers found a Piper Aerostar 601P aircraft in a cornfield off of S. Yellow Thunder Road north of the airport in the Township of Delton. The aircraft had one occupant who was conscious and alert and speaking with the officer upon arrival of EMS. The pilot was extricated from the plane by Delton Fire and EMS and transferred by Med Flight to the UW Hospital where he is in critical condition.

Investigation is continuing by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department and the FAA.

 

The operator has been identified as William Wenkman, 88 years old, from Wisconsin Dells.
