National Move Over Day October 17,2020

NEWS RELEASE

October 14, 2020

This Saturday, October 17, 2020 is National Move Over Day.  The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is participating in this national awareness campaign to help make drivers aware of their responsibility when approaching stopped emergency vehicles on the roadway.

Every year, law enforcement officers, fire fighters, emergency medics, highway workers, and tow truck operators are injured or killed on Wisconsin’s roadways by drivers who fail to move over. Our first responders frequently work in dangerous conditions which is why it is so important for drivers to understand their responsibility to move over or slow down when encountering these situations.

Sheriff Meister wants to remind everyone that Wisconsin’s Move Over or Slow Down law requires motorists, when approaching stopped emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and highway machinery to move over if safe and legal to do so, or, slow down to a safe speed until passed the stopped emergency vehicle.  Penalties include a fine of $263.50 and potential license suspension.

A safe driving practice is:

-Keep an eye out for flashing lights and emergency vehicles

-Slow Down when you see first responder vehicles

-Move Over as road conditions allow
