Ironton Littering Incident

NEWS RELEASE

LITTERING INCIDENT

On October 1, 2020, the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a littering complaint which had occurred in the Town of Ironton.  Town employees stated that they had located in excess of forty tires that had been discarded along the roadway on State Lane.

The previous day, a concerned citizen had reported a truck and trailer parked in the Village of Ironton.  The flatbed trailer was loaded with tires.  Each time the citizen had observed the trailer loaded with tires previously, the citizen reported seeing tires along the road in the following days.

The investigating deputy was able to identify the suspect vehicle through surveillance camera footage and the previous citizen tip.  The truck owner was identified as Alton Copus, age 27, of Ironton.  Upon questioning, Copus admitted to dumping the tires along State Lane.  Copus was issued a citation for littering.  Copus also agreed to collect the tires and dispose of them properly.

Depositing large items on or along any highway is in violation of §287.81(2m) and is punishable by a $767.50 forfeiture for each violation or item deposited.  Large items include tires, appliances, furniture, vehicles, building materials, and demolition waste.  The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens to dispose of these items properly to protect the environment and avoid costly citations.
