BIRTH RECORDS

  • Birth Records are filed in the county in which you are born, as well as the county where your parents resided at the time of birth
  • Adoptions - Register in Probate
    • Adoptees new birth record remains in the county of birth
  • Paternity Statements - Child Support
  • Legitimization Forms - Register of Deeds
    • Legitimization can be done when the biological parents have married each other after the child's birth
  • Name Changes - Clerk of Courts

MARRIAGE RECORDS

  • Apply for marriage license - County Clerk
  • Obtain certified copies - Register of Deeds
  • Marriage record is filed in the county in which the marriage took place
    • For example - if you applied in Dane County but were married in Sauk County, the record is filed in Sauk County

DEATH RECORDS

  • If death occurs out of state, the record stays there
  • If a person dies in a different county from which they resided, the record will be in both counties
