BIRTH RECORDS
- Birth Records are filed in the county in which you are born, as well as the county where your parents resided at the time of birth
- Adoptions - Register in Probate
- Adoptees new birth record remains in the county of birth
- Paternity Statements - Child Support
- Legitimization Forms - Register of Deeds
- Legitimization can be done when the biological parents
have married each other after the child's birth
- Name Changes - Clerk of Courts
MARRIAGE RECORDS
- Apply for marriage license - County Clerk
- Obtain certified copies - Register of Deeds
- Marriage record is filed in the county in which the marriage took place
- For example - if you applied in Dane County but were married in Sauk County, the record is filed in Sauk County
DEATH RECORDS
- If death occurs out of state, the record stays there
- If a person dies in a different county from which they resided, the record will be in both counties
