The dental bus is a nonprofit mobile dentist office that provides dental services to children ages 3-18 who are on medical assistance or have no dental insurance and are eligible for free lunch in the Sauk county area. The dental bus is funded by Ronald McDonald charities, private donations, and UW Madison Hospital and Clinics. The Sauk County Health Department coordinates the program with the assistance of all of the school nurses
in Sauk County. Usually, each school and the health department have one day each for appointments for their children.
Traditionally, the dental bus comes to the Sauk County area twice a year for 2 weeks at a time, usually in the fall and spring.
The school nurses and the health department keep a waiting list of children who need dental services, and coordinate appointments prior to the arrival of the dental bus. The goal of the dental bus is to provide quality care on a short term basis, once a child has all their dental work done, they are taken off the list to make room for a new child needing dental care. The program is not designed to be a child's regular source of dental care, the need to have routine and follow-up care with their regular/family dentist. The goal is to offer services to as many children as possible.
