2007 Sauk County Tree and Prairie Seed Sale

The Sauk County Land Conservation Department has begun taking orders for the 2007 annual Sauk County Tree and Prairie Seed Sale. The program is designed to encourage the local planting of native woodland and prairie species by meeting a demand for low priced seed and planting stock. Only plant species native to the state of Wisconsin are offered.

Tree species available are: white cedar, red pine, white pine, white spruce, tamarack, paper birch, river birch, black cherry, black walnut, bur oak, hickory, butternut, green ash, red oak, sugar maple, white ash, pin oak, and white oak. Wildlife shrubs available include: elderberry, hazelnut, American plum, gray dogwood, serviceberry, red osier dogwood, and highbush cranberry. Trees and shrub packages are sold in bundles of 25, with prices ranging between $20 and $40 per bundle.

Prairie seed mixes are also available. These mixes provide an opportunity to reintroduce a variety of native plants that used to dominate the open landscape in Sauk County. Specific blends are available to meet almost all of the soil and light conditions found within the county. The prairie planting mixes include a blend of numerous native prairie grass species and a wide array of wildflowers. Prices on prairie seed mixes depend on the mix composition and coverage area. Available packages range from quantities sufficient to plant large wildlife habitat areas to small garden plots.

Please contact the Land Conservation Department at 355-3245 if you would like an order form.. Planting stock supply is limited, so all orders are filled on a first-come basis and must be postmarked by January 26, 2007. Trees and seeds are tentatively scheduled to be distributed April 27, 2007 at the former Sauk County landfill. Participants will be notified approximately two weeks before delivery.
