Invasive Plants Inventory

The Greater Sauk County Invasive Plant Team Needs Your Help!

  • Multiflora Rose
  • Buckthorn
  • Garlic Mustard
  • Barberry
  • Honeysuckle

If you have these plants on your land, please tell us!

The invasives team has received a grant to inventory, map and coordinate efforts to control these plants in the Baraboo Hills in Sauk and Columbia Counties. The team is asking area landowners to report the presence of these aggressive plants, in order to create a map showing where they are most pervasive. Based on those results, the team will be able to organize classes and other programs to help people control and eventually eliminate invasives.

Why do we need to stop the spread of invasive species?

  • Because they don't have competitors here (they were introduced from Europe and Asia), they grow aggressively and crowd out needed native plants.
  • In forests, they shade out native vegetation and reduce the health of the forest. They can also have a long-term impact on forest survival by preventing tree regeneration. The shrub species can be difficult to walk through, making it hard to cut firewood or carry out other forestry activities.
  • In pastures, they reduce the forage available for animals.
  • They decrease wildlife populations through the loss of habitat. Wildlife need diverse habitat with a wide variety of plants to provide shelter, food and cover.
