Newport

The lost city of Newport was begun in 1853 when reports that a railroad bridge would cross the Wisconsin River at that point. Planned for a population of 10,000 catering to tourists and lumberjacks, landowners set their prices too high and the bridge was located a mile upstream. This photo is of the Old Newport Hotel which was torn down in 1908.
