The Illinois Iron mine was located near LaRue,
ca. 1907. Iron was discovered here around the turn of the century with
the potential of great reserves. Forty feet below the surface, ore with
53% iron content was mined and shipments began in 1904. By 1914 the digging
had reached a depth where the mines were being flooded and the iron age
in that area came to an end.
