Lake Delton

The Delton Post Office around 1913. Originally known as Norris in 1849, the village name was changed to Delton after the lake constructed by W.J. Newman in 1929. Many Winnebago made their homes here and established the Indian Ceremonial (the second oldest attraction in the Dells area). Water power meant milling operations prospered, and loggers stopped here for dry clothing, food and supplies.

With the advent of the automobile and freedom of the open road, the Delton area became a prime attraction for travelers to the village in the late 1920's when Chicago millionaire William Newman and his associate Ralph Hines built the dam that formed Lake Delton. This "Cottage Home" hotel, erected around 1849, is located along Highway 12.
