Denzer

Denzer derives its name from William Denzer the village's first postmaster. In 1861 he donated land for a school, Zion Church and a cemetery. The Denzer Store, background, was owned by the Schoeporster family, and later, by George Zick. Zick operated the store until he was 90, serving home made ice cream to patrons several times a week.

Harvesting ice near Denzer during the early 1900's. Ice was stored in sheds, insulated with sawdust. During the summer months, ice was delivered to homes for use in "ice boxes" (today's refrigerators). The winter ice was also used in meat markets to preserve meat.
