Elizabeth Strunz and Dan Curran were the recipients of the 2011 Environmental Education Scholarships offered by the Sauk County Land Conservation Committee and the Conservation Planning, and Zoning Department.
Elizabeth currently runs Honey Creek Daycare in Prairie du Sac. She uses a variety of curriculums along with her tree nursery business to teach children about the environment. Elizabeth attended the National Association for Family Child Care Annual Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada. “One workshop had a lot of great ideas for having outdoor classrooms and activities to get students involved with the outdoors and environmental conservation,” Elizabeth commented.
Dan taught biology, wildlife biology, and physical science at the Baraboo Area High School. He attended the Project WET/Project WILD Professional Development Workshop at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge which provided a curriculum for infusing environmental education into his science classroom through inquiry-based methods.
The Sauk County Land Conservation Committee and Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Department also support other teachers through its environmental education initiatives. The benefits to teachers, our area youth, and ultimately the environment will be evident for years to come. Each year scholarships are made available to Sauk County educators. Please contact the Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Department if you would like to receive more information at ppohle@co.sauk.wi.us or 355-3245.
